As global trade continues to grow, regional integration in Africa has become a critical strategy for boosting economic growth and improving trade efficiency. However, cross-border trade in Africa faces significant challenges, including security risks and inefficiencies in regulatory systems.

Challenges in Africa's Cross-Border Trade

In many African countries, transit trade taxes are a key source of government revenue. But this also makes the trade route a hotspot for security issues. Weak border control and inadequate monitoring have led to frequent smuggling and illegal activities, driving up operating costs and causing delays in transportation.

For example, transporting goods from Mombasa to Kampala used to take around 9-10 days, with frequent thefts and damages. This has created tremendous pressure on both governments and businesses.

Africa Challenge

The Need for Change: Securing and Streamlining Cross-Border Logistics

Addressing these challenges and improving trade efficiency, while ensuring the security of cross-border logistics, has become an urgent task for African governments and businesses. Jointech, through collaboration with customs authorities in several African countries and on-the-ground research, has introduced an innovative Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) to support Africa's regional integration process.

By enabling real-time data sharing and improving the efficiency of logistics operations, Jointech's ECTS solution is paving the way for smoother, safer trade across Africa.

Smart Solutions for Various Cargo Transport Needs

Jointech's Electronic Cargo Tracking System is designed to meet the specific needs of different types of transport vehicles. It provides comprehensive coverage for all transport scenarios, ensuring safe and efficient monitoring of cross-border cargo.

  • Container Truck Transport
Our system integrates high-precision sensors and smart monitoring technology to track container conditions. If there’s an unauthorized opening, deviation from the planned route, or low battery, the system triggers an immediate alert.

  • Tanker Truck Transport
Our solution for tankers includes dual locks and multi-valve monitoring, with explosion-proof certifications to ensure the safe transport of fuel and other sensitive goods.

  • Flatbed Truck Transport
With a full electronic net covering the cargo, this solution offers tracking and tamper-proof features. If the net is cut or torn, the system immediately sends an alert, reducing the risk of theft.

These smart terminals and monitoring systems offer full security for cross-border logistics, improving regulatory efficiency and helping create a more integrated and secure African trade network.

Real Results:Success Across Eastern and Southern Africa

  • COMESA has facilitated cross-border information sharing and collaborative oversight through electronic monitoring and sealing systems.

  • After the implementation of ECTS, transport time between countries in Eastern Africa has drastically decreased. For example, the trip from Mombasa to Kampala, which previously took 9-10 days, is now completed in just 4 days. (Source:  East African Community)

  • In the second half of 2018, countries in Eastern Africa nearly $370 million in transit trade revenue managed through the ECTS system. (Source: WCO News)

Looking Ahead: Supporting Africa's Economic Integration

Jointech continues to work closely with African customs, revenue authorities, and the World Customs Organization (WCO) to advance the standardization, digitization, and automation of trade processes under the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) framework. To date, Jointech has deployed advanced cross-border cargo monitoring systems in several African countries and will continue to expand the use of smart seals to offer sustainable solutions for governments and businesses.

Jointech's Electronic Cargo Tracking System  plays a pivotal role in enhancing trade security, efficiency, and cost reduction. We look forward to partnering with more African countries to support economic integration across the continent.
